(AP) ? British Prime Minister David Cameron set the tone Thursday for what is expected to be a bitter fight over the European Union's budget, warning that the latest proposal for a spending ceiling does not go far enough.

Arriving at a summit of the 27 EU leaders, Cameron voiced the concerns of several countries that do not want to see an increase in the bloc's seven-year spending plan at a time when tough spending cuts are being imposed back home.

"No, I'm not happy at all," Cameron said about the latest offer for the 2014-2020 ?1 trillion ($1.28 trillion) spending ceiling, as he headed into a meeting with the author of the proposals, EU President Herman Van Rompuy.

"Clearly, at a time when we're making difficult decisions at home over public spending, it would be quite wrong ? it is quite wrong ? for there to be proposals for this increased extra spending in the EU."

"So we're going to be negotiating very hard for a good deal for Britain's taxpayers and for Europe's taxpayers," he told reporters.

The EU budget primarily funds programs to spur growth in the bloc's less developed regions and farming and amounts to about 1 percent of the EU's gross domestic product.

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, backs more spending, arguing that cross-border initiatives will help to create the economic growth and jobs that the bloc of a half-billion people needs.

Facing an ever more vocal Euroskeptic electorate at home, Cameron is under huge pressure to veto any seven-year deal which would make the budget bigger. The U.K. and other countries that contribute more then they receive from the budget ? such as the Netherlands, Sweden and, to a certain extent Germany ? claim an austerity budget is the only justifiable outcome at a time when almost every member state has to cut its budget to lower debt.

Fifteen of the EU's most financially and economically vulnerable countries have joined forces to oppose any cuts to funds earmarked for economic growth and development. These countries include not only traditionally poorer member states, many in Eastern Europe, but also those hit hardest by the financial crisis, like Greece, Portugal and Spain.

They argue that they need sustained, even increased, help to close the wealth gap on the continent and that EU institutions need the means to implement their jobs and growth policies.

"Certain countries want to make drastic reductions in the budget. That's a big mistake," said Elio Di Rupo, Belgium's prime minister.

With every country having the power of veto, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte fully realized what was coming.

"There will be quite a battle to come ? the French, the British, southern Europe, eastern Europe, we all have our demands," Rutte said. "I don't know whether it will work out."

Going into the open-ended summit, which might well stretch into Saturday, Van Rompuy made a first compromise proposal that leaned toward Cameron's demands. It proposes a cut of between ?3 billion ($4 billion) and ?24 billion ($31 billion), depending on how the figures are read.

"With less money, we cannot do the same as before," Van Rompuy wrote in the invitation letter he sent to the 27 leaders.

If the summit fails to find a compromise, the issue could spill over into a new meeting next month, or into next year. There is no set deadline for a deal but the closer it gets to 2014, the tougher it will be for a smooth introduction of new programs.

"In talks with colleagues, I had one message. If this doesn't work out at once, let's be sure that the mood is not that dark that we have to spend months on patching up personal relationships," Rutte said.

If there is no deal up to 2014, there would be a rollover of the 2013 budget plus a 2 percent increase accounting for inflation.

Love Your Home More With These Home Improvement Tips | EzinePR

Update your kitchen cabinets. If you are on a tight budget, a simple way to update your kitchen cabinets and drawers is by replacing the hardware. Knobs and pulls are available in a style to suit every one?s taste, from contemporary to vintage to traditional. When you replace the hardware, don?t forget to clean your cabinets thoroughly. You will be surprised how many people think that you have actually replaced your cabinets!

When applying a fresh coat of paint to a textured wall or ceiling, use a paint roller with a thick, fluffy nap. These rollers can be more prone to dripping, so you have to be careful. However, they are essential for making sure every nook and cranny on the surface receives some paint.

Putting a hand grip or rail in ones shower may seem like is a simple home improvement job that could save you a trip to the hospital from falling in the shower. Having a rail to steady oneself while getting in and out can also make showering more comfortable.

Spice up your mantelpiece by decorating it with similarly grouped items. Collect objects that are similar in nature such as wood items, only items with letters on them, items that are old fashioned or different sized decorative paper boxes. They create an interesting focal point near your fireplace and can prove to be conversation pieces.

Get new tiling. If your tiling does not match your walls, or is cracking and becoming damaged, replacing it is a great home improvement project that is relatively simple and inexpensive. Stick-on floor tiles are available at many home improvement stores, and if you want to use the real ones, they are not too expensive either.

The king of all home improvements is the kitchen remodel. This is the number one project that new home buyers are looking to have completed when purchasing a home. Kitchen remodels also yield the biggest return on investment. If you are remodeling a very dated kitchen, the return on investment can reach and surpass 125%.

The dominant weather conditions in your region should be taken into account when you are considering which home improvement projects to take on. Regardless of how much you might want a specific new feature, sometimes it might be impractical because of the weather. For example, a complex backyard barbecue project would not be a very good idea in the Pacific Northwest because of the high amounts of rain in that area.

Try giving all of your appliances a bit of a facelift. Try to get your appliances to match or to be of the same set. If they don?t match, try ordering matching face panels or doors. The look and feel of a more cohesive room decorum can really bring a room together.

To cut down your home?s energy costs, replace your current thermostat with one that can be programmed. Many families save close to $200 yearly through programmable thermostat use. A programmable thermostat can be set to change when your family is sleeping or out of the house, keeping you from paying for heating and cooling you don?t need. They?re also inexpensive, and can be picked up for less than $40.

Add flowers and candles to your home. These additions are a cheap and easy way to add cheer to a home. The flowers will add color and the candles will brighten up the room and add a pleasant aroma if scented. Candles should be used with care, however, to prevent fires.

When selecting home renovations, consider the savings you will see in the future. For example, a new fridge may save you significantly on electricity bills, and new insulation in the attic could help reduce heating and cooling costs. While these renovations may seem expensive, future savings should always be considered during the planning stage of a home renovation.

When replacing flooring, think about the kind of foot-traffic that will be in the room. Stone and ceramic floors are perfect for high traffic areas such as the foyer and bathroom. Areas in your home that have low traffic, such as personal bedrooms, are better suited for flooring that is more attractive but harder to clean.

Here?s a simple way of fixing gaps at the bottom of poorly fitted interior doors. Sandwich a section of timber (cut to the width of the door) between two pieces of paneling. Leave each piece of paneling sticking out beyond the upper side of the two by two by about one inch. Slip the extension over the bottom of the door and screw each piece of paneling into place against each side of the door.

In order to properly renovate your kitchen when taking on a home improvement project, it is important that you shut off the water. If any accidents happen such as accidentally hitting a pipe, the mistake of flooding the whole kitchen can be prevented. It is better to be safe than sorry.

With the information that you have just discovered, you are certainly going to enjoy the many benefits that these tips and tricks have to offer. From the cost-saving secrets to time-saving strategies, you are sure to become empowered now that you know the secrets to success for home improvement.

'Mount Doom' likely to blow soon

Mount Ruapehu, a New Zealand volcano that stood in for Mount Doom in the "Lord of the Rings" movies, seems to be heading for an eruption.

New Zealand's Department of Conservation (DOC) has warned hikers to keep off the summit, saying that recent temperature readings of the volcano indicate an increased likelihood of an eruption in the coming weeks.

The crater of Mount Ruapehu is usually filled with a snow-melt lake, and a peculiar temperature difference between the lake and the ground beneath it has led scientists to issue the warning.

"We think that the temperature a few hundred meters beneath Crater Lake is about 800 Celsius [1,472 degrees Fahrenheit], but the lake itself is only about 20 C [68 F]," said volcanologist Steven Sherburn, in an alert bulletin released by GNS Science, a New Zealand geologic hazard monitoring organization. "This suggests the vent is partly blocked, which may be leading to a pressure buildup beneath Crater Lake." [10 Biggest Volcano Eruptions in History]

The pressure could give way in the form of an eruption, minor or major.

"Sooner or later that situation will be rectified, either in a small, relatively passive way, or with a significant eruption," DOC volcanic risk manager Harry Keys told Radio New Zealand.

Ruapehu, New Zealand's largest active volcano, last erupted in 2007, propelling a large rock onto the leg of a nearby climber who recovered after having his leg amputated. Historically, it has had major eruptions every 20 to 50 years, according to DOC, with the last big ones coming in 1995 and 1996.

The volcano shared the role of Mount Doom in Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" movie trilogy, but Ruapehu might be thought of as more of a stunt double than a featured player. Long shots of Mount Doom in the films showed nearby Mount Ngauruhoe, while scenes that supposedly took place on the slopes of Mount Doom were filmed on Ruapehu.

Mount Ngauruhoe, also an active volcano, last erupted in 1975. Mount Doom last erupted at the end of the Third Age of Middle Earth.

Interviews with Norwegians: Marion Whiteley, co-owner of ...

This article is one in a series of interviews with local businesses/organizations in Stavanger. The purpose of these interviews is to help the expat community have a peek into daily Norwegian business and lifestyle.

Interviews with Norwegians: Marion Whiteley, co-owner of Stavanger International Babysitter Service

Where are you from?

I was born in Liverpool, but I lived in Bergen most of my life. My mother is Norwegian and my father is British.

What brought you to Stavanger/ Norway?

My mother decided to come back to Norway when I was a baby. As I mentioned, most of my life was in Bergen but I also lived in San Diego, Paris and Calgary for my husband?s job, which is what also brought me to Stavanger.

How do you find it Stavanger?

It is a more international environment than Bergen. There is more of a variety of stores. You can meet unique people from all over the world here too.

Any tips for people settling into the area?

Drive around to get to know the area. Usually, when I move to a new place I drive and get lost and then put ?home? into the GPS to find my way back. In Norway, it is easier to meet people if you are outside with your kids or dog. For expats, meeting other expats is much easier than meeting Norwegians, they can be tough to get to know.

Can you tell us more about yourself?

I am married with 2 kids and 2 grandkids, at the moment. ?I used to work at the cultural department in Bergen planning festivals for a suburb of Bergen. I have worked with children for 10 years have my Masters in Business Management from BI. I have been out of Norway for 5 years and when we came back to the country, we came to Stavanger.

What got you into child care?

After talking to people at INN (International Network Norway), I realized childcare for expats was lacking. People had to turn down social invitations because of childcare needs could not be met in Stavanger. It makes the spouse even more isolated and some move back home prematurely because of that. I, too, have been in a similar situation when living abroad trying to find reliable childcare. I saw the need in the area and the business opportunity and decided to open SIBS, (Stavanger International Babysitter Service), along with my business partner, Solveig Schjelderup. Solvieg recruits and corresponds with the babysitters and personnel for the day park. She also was a registered nurse with experience in psychiatry. I take care of the customers, administration and the website.

What kind of services does SIBS offer and are they in English or Norwegian, or both?

The company officially opened in January and in mid-November the day park will open. The day park, held at the Madla Community House, is a place where parents can drop off their children and have them looked after while they run errands, meet with friends, or just need a break. For now, it is only open on Tuesdays from 9:00 to 13:00. The babysitting service is already open for business- you can book a babysitter online! SIBS is a new company, so we know the startup is essential. If interest is shown, we will open the day park on Thursdays too.

There are a few babysitters that speak Norwegian, but all speak English. Our babysitters are from all over the world. Our clients can put in requests for a specific sitter, or background they would like for them to have. ?Also, all of our babysitters have completed a first aid course that focuses on children.

How much does it cost for a babysitter? How much is it for the day park?

The client and babysitter decide what they will pay the babysitter, but we recommend 120 NOK per hour. Of course, this can be adjusted depending upon length of job and number of kids. The day park is 400 NOK per day, no matter how long the child is at the day park.

How can you be contacted?

You can go to our website, www.sibs.no, call me at 95 91 26 84 or email me at marion@sibs.no.? You can also contact my business partner, Solveig Schjelderup, by phone 98 10 94 14 or email solveig@sibs.no.

Tel Aviv bus hit by bomb; Hamas celebrates

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - A bomb exploded on a bus in central Tel Aviv on Wednesday, wounding 15 people in what Israeli officials said was a terrorist attack that could complicate efforts to secure a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Celebratory gunfire rang out across Gaza as the news spread and the territory's Islamist rulers Hamas praised the bombing, but no one claimed immediate responsibility.

The blast shattered windows on the bus as it drove along a tree-lined street next to Israel's huge defense ministry headquarters. Israel's ambulance service said four people suffered moderate-to-severe injuries and 11 were lightly hurt.

Police said it was not a suicide attack and suggested that someone might have left the device on the number 142 bus.

The driver, who escaped largely unscathed, told reporters he had not seen anyone suspicious get on board.

"I felt the explosion ... Smoke was everywhere, you couldn't see a thing," he said. The blue and white vehicle was not torn apart by the blast, indicating it was a relatively small device.

The bombing happened on the eighth day of an Israeli offensive against the Gaza Strip and coincided with intensive diplomatic efforts to secure a lasting truce.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri hailed the explosion.

"Hamas blesses the attack in Tel Aviv and sees it as a natural response to the Israeli massacres...in Gaza," he told Reuters. "Palestinian factions will resort to all means in order to protect our Palestinian civilians in the absence of a world effort to stop the Israeli aggression."

Sweet cakes were handed out in celebration in Gaza's main hospital, which has been inundated with wounded from the round-the-clock Israeli bombing and shelling.

"GATES OF HELL"

"You opened the gates of hell on yourselves," Hamas's armed wing, the al-Qassam brigades, said on Twitter. "Oh Zionists, you have to drag yourselves out of hell, go back home now, go back to Germany, Poland, Russia, America and anywhere else."

The last time a bomb blast hit Israel's commercial capital was in April 2006, when a Palestinian suicide bomber killed 11 people at a sandwich stand near the old central bus station.

Hamas militants have fired at least four rockets at the laid-back Mediterranean metropolis over the past week, but they scored no direct hits and caused no casualties.

Israel launched its air offensive with the stated aim of halting all missile launches out of the Gaza Strip, which lies some 70 km (40 miles) south of Tel Aviv, a cosmopolitan city renowned for its nightlife and vibrant beach culture.

Hamas had warned when the latest conflict flared that it would not confine itself to unleashing rockets.

"This was a terror attack. There is a massive preparedness within the police and security forces. We must keep awareness to a maximum. These are not normal times," said Israel's Police Chief Yohanan Danino.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon denounced the attack, saying nothing justified the targeting of civilians.

The United States, Israel's main ally, also condemned the bus bombing. "These attacks against innocent Israeli civilians are outrageous," the White House said.

More than 140 Palestinians, more than half of them civilians, have died so far in Israel's Gaza offensive. Five Israelis, including one soldier, have also been killed.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, trying to calm tensions over Gaza, flew from Israel to Cairo to meet Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi, who is spearheading ceasefire negotiations.

Something Someday Will Kill Facebook, But We?re Not There Yet

facebook_dieTwo years ago I wrote a post entitled "Can Anything Stop The Facebook Juggernaut?" in which I marvelled at the fact that Facebook was then worth a whopping $35 billion, according to Second Market. Today, after its much-touted stock price "collapse," the company is worth roughly $51 billion. It's a strange world when a market-value increase of $16 billion/~45 percent over a two-year period is somehow perceived as a crisis. My answer then to that post's titular question was a grudging no. (My assessment of Facebook as "relentlessly mediocre" remains unchanged today.) Which remains true, in the short term. Lately, though, I've been thinking about the medium and long term -- by which I mean 5-10 years and 15-30 years from now; the tech world changes so quickly that anything beyond that is sheer guesswork -- and trying to imagine when, how, and if Facebook will wither away.

Knesset Leader to Newsmax: Israel Ready for Ground Assault on Gaza

In an ominous sign that the violence in Gaza may continue to escalate, a key member of the Israeli Knesset tells Newsmax that the Jewish state is prepared to launch a ground invasion of Hamas-held Gaza in the next 24 to 48 hours, if Palestinian terrorists continue to launch rocket barrages at Israeli cities.

On Thursday, the Israeli cabinet decided to call up 30,000 reservists. This came on the same day that the Tel Aviv area came under rocket fire. It marked the first time Tel Aviv came under attack since the 1991 Gulf War.

Knesset member Tzipi Hotovely, who often is described as the ?intellectual voice? of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s Likud Party, tells Newsmax: ?I must say, for many Israelis this is a big issue. Shooting into the most important city is like shooting rockets into New York.

?This is something that is unbearable and impossible for any country to suffer and to accept,? she says. ?We will do anything to prevent our people to suffer from terror and rocket attacks.?

Hotovely spoke to Newsmax just before midnight in Israel, while driving to the southern area where three Israelis were killed in a rocket attack earlier Thursday. She emphasized that Israel wants peace with its neighbors, but will act to defend its citizens from deadly missile barrages.

Some analysts suspect an additional motive for the attacks: The need to weaken Hamas and impair its ability to attack Israel, if an attack must be launched this spring to destroy Iran?s nuclear facilities.

In the past week, Hamas has fired over 220 rockets into Israel. Approximately 80 of the rockets have been intercepted by Israel?s Iron Dome missile defense system.

Hotovely tells Newsmax that Israel is prepared to launch a ground attack in Gaza in order to further decimate Hamas and its weapons caches, if an assault proves necessary in order to halt hostilities.

Israeli F15s have been relentlessly pounding targets in Gaza in response to the rocket salvos that have forced over a million Israeli citizens to hunker down in bomb shelters and safe rooms throughout the region.

Hotovely says Israel?s leaders are waiting only to see if Hamas, which denies Israel?s right to exist, will cease its attacks.

?The reason that we?re waiting, for the moment,? she says, ?is that we need to know how much the message is clear? and [whether] Hamas realizes it there is no real point to shooting [at] civilians and hurting innocent people, children and women.?

Internationally, concern is spreading that the strong Israeli response to the escalating rocket attacks from Gaza could trigger unintended consequences throughout the volatile region.

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, has recalled Egypt?s diplomatic representative from Israel in protest of the Israeli assault. On Wednesday, a precisely targeted attack killed top Hamas military chief Ahmed al-Jabari, who Israelis say is the mastermind behind a number of attacks on the Jewish state.

Morsi finds himself squeezed between Egypt?s treaty obligations under the Camp David accords on the one hand, and a growing animus in Egypt to take action to defend Gaza?s Palestinians.

?Israelis must recognize that we do not accept this aggression,? Morsi told Egyptians Wednesday in a televised address.

As a sign of his nation?s support for Palestinians, Morsi ordered his prime minister and Egyptian diplomats to travel to Gaza on Friday.

But Hotovely tells Newsmax that time is running out for the Islamists in Gaza to cease hostilities. Asked if she expects ground troops to push into Gaza in the next 48 hours if the rocket attacks continue, she replied: ?Yes, I think that we?re not afraid of doing that.

?We did that four years ago in a strong military operation. This government is willing to do everything in order to protect the people. I?m saying again, no one is in favor of war. We all prefer to live our lives peacefully. But when the enemies are forcing us to protect ourselves and defend ourselves, this is what we need to do.?

She added, ?The IDF has many and various ways to show its power, and to use the information we have about the leaders of Hamas. Most terrorists at the moment are busy hiding from the IDF forces and the Israeli air force.

?And this is a better way to control the willingness of those people to hurt our country, by making the threat of their leadership to lose their lives if they keep on shooting rockets on people in Israel.?

The last time Israel launched a ground assault in Gaza was in January 2009. Over 1,000 Palestinians and 13 Israelis died in that conflict.

President Barack Obama has been in touch with Morsi and the Netanyahu government. The administration has issued a statement supporting Israel?s right to defend itself from rocket attacks, while urging an immediate end to the hostilities.

Commented Hotovely: ?At the moment, it appears that as much as the American president would like to keep things silent in the Middle East and not be under war. Unfortunately, it doesn?t go this way.

?The Egyptian leader is going to come to Gaza tomorrow, and I?m afraid we are not going into a better world of peace when it comes to the Egyptian issue. But we still need to see, because it is too early to speak about how the Islamic revolution and Muslim Brotherhood will influence the whole Hamas issue.?

The service is now available to about 20 percent of Facebook users in the U.S. and will gradually roll out to all users.

The Gift feature allows users to buy real-world gifts for their friends. Facebook prompts users to consider buying a gift when their friend?s birthday or a big event comes up.?Earlier this month, Facebook allowed?mobile users to send gifts.?

Facebook GiftsThe new partners should make Gifts even more attractive to users. Right now, when you try to pick out a gift, Facebook recommends a bunch of stuff to you and also gives you categories to choose from like food & drink, babies & kids and home & kitchen to choose from. But a lot of the gifts are products from makers and brands you don?t recognize. Getting some bigger brands and more familiar products in the mix might make it easier to get people to pull the trigger on a gift.

For the retail partners, the integration with Gifts gives them a chance to market themselves and pick up some new customers. Fab CEO Jason Goldberg told me he?s not interested in the revenue from the partnership. He said he?s looking forward to the ability to spread awareness of Fab. The company plans on giving recipients a $5 gift card to buy their own Fab products.

Gifts represents a big commerce opportunity for Facebook. Since it knows a lot about what?s happening within your social network, it can push users to make targeted purchases throughout the year. Also, getting people to buy even one product allows Facebook to get a credit card on file, which could turn out to be important if Facebook builds out its own payment system.

Long-lived Mars Odyssey orbiter resumes work with fresh equipment

ScienceDaily (Nov. 13, 2012) ? The NASA Mars Odyssey orbiter has resumed duty after switching to a set of redundant equipment, including a main computer, that had not been used since before the spacecraft's 2001 launch.

Odyssey relayed data to Earth late Sunday that it received from NASA's Opportunity rover on Mars using the orbiter's fresh "B-side" radio for UHF (ultra-high frequency) communications. In plans for this week are relay opportunities for the newest Mars rover, Curiosity, and resumption of Odyssey's own scientific observations.

"The side-swap has gone well. All the subsystems that we are using for the first time are performing as intended," said Odyssey Project Manager Gaylon McSmith of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.

Like many spacecraft, this orbiter carries a pair of redundant main computers, to have a backup available if one fails. Odyssey's A-side computer and B-side computer each have several other redundant subsystems linked to just that computer.

Odyssey is already the longest-working spacecraft ever sent to Mars. The side swap was initiated last week in response to months of diagnostic data indicating that the A side's inertial measurement unit shows signs of wearing out. This gyroscope-containing mechanism senses changes in the spacecraft's orientation, providing important information for control of pointing the antenna, solar arrays and instruments.

The diagnostics indicate that the A side's inertial measurement unit still has a few months or more of useful life. The reason for switching sides was to keep a fully functional A side available in case of any problem on the B side in coming years that can be dealt with by switching back to the A side temporarily for a few days or weeks.

"It is testimony to the excellent design of this spacecraft and operation of this mission in partnership with Lockheed Martin that we have brand-new major components available to begin using after more than 11 years at Mars," McSmith said.

JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Odyssey project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Denver built the spacecraft. JPL and Lockheed Martin collaborate on operating the spacecraft.

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which shares with Odyssey the data-relay responsibility for NASA's Mars rovers, continued relay support while Odyssey was unavailable for a few days following the side swap.

Odyssey launched April 7, 2001, began orbiting Mars Oct. 24 that year, began systematic science observations of Mars in early 2002, and broke the previous record for longest-working Mars spacecraft in December 2010. Odyssey's longevity enables continued science by instruments on the orbiter, including the monitoring of seasonal changes on Mars from year to year, in addition to communication-relay service. Greenpeace, coal miners remain at loggerheads | Eco News

Mining companies in the northern Australian state of Queensland miners and the environmental lobby group Greenpeace remain at loggerheads over the future of the coal industry.

At the same time it seems neither side has done anything to initiate talks with the other.

The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) says Greenpeace is trying to drive a wedge into coal mining communities, while the activists say miners don?t care about communities who rely on the iconic World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef.

AAP Newsagency reports that in the state capital, Brisbane, about 50 Greenpeace activists dressed as creatures from the reef protested outside a coal mining conference.

They say plans for at least nine new coalmines in central Queensland, showcased at the Galilee Basin Coal Conference, would destroy the reef.

Speaking at the conference, QRC chief executive Michael Roche told miners Greenpeace?s anti-coal campaign would destroy coal mining communities.

?Regional communities understand their long-term prosperity relies on the economic diversity that the minerals and energy sector is delivering,? Mr Roche said.

?Greenpeace have no interest in the future of these communities.?

Greenpeace spokeswoman Louise Matthiesson responded, saying miners were focused only on coal mining communities at the expense of all others.

?There?s a whole string of communities that rely on the Great Barrier Reef for their prosperity, what does the QRC have to say about them?? she asked.

Each group is making claims about the other, but Ms Matthiesson said it was ?fair call? to say neither side had made much effort to talk.

?I think it?s sad that the QRC and Greenpeace are 1000 miles apart on the future of coal,? she said.

?There needs to be some difficult discussions, and I think the time will come,? she added.

It's not just what you eat, but when you eat it: Link between fat cell and brain clock molecules shown

ScienceDaily (Nov. 11, 2012) ? Fat cells store excess energy and signal these levels to the brain. In a new study this week in Nature Medicine, Georgios Paschos PhD, a research associate in the lab of Garret FitzGerald, MD, FRS director of the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, shows that deletion of the clock gene Arntl, also known as Bmal1, in fat cells, causes mice to become obese, with a shift in the timing of when this nocturnal species normally eats. These findings shed light on the complex causes of obesity in humans.

The Penn studies are surprising in two respects. "The first is that a relatively modest shift in food consumption into what is normally the rest period for mice can favor energy storage," says Paschos. "Our mice became obese without consuming more calories." Indeed, the Penn researchers could also cause obesity in normal mice by replicating the altered pattern of food consumption observed in mice with a broken clock in their fat cells.

This behavioral change in the mice is somewhat akin to night-eating syndrome in humans, also associated with obesity and originally described by Penn's Albert Stunkard in 1955. The second surprising observation relates to the molecular clock itself. Traditionally, clocks in peripheral tissues are thought to follow the lead of the "master clock" in the SCN of the brain, a bit like members of an orchestra following a conductor. "While we have long known that peripheral clocks have some capacity for autonomy -- the percussionist can bang the drum without instructions from the conductor -- here we see that the orchestrated behavior of the percussionist can, itself, influence the conductor," explains FitzGerald.

Daily intake of food is driven by oscillating expression of genes that drive and suppress appetite in the hypothalamus. When the clock was broken in fat cells, the Penn investigators found that this hypothalamic rhythm was disrupted to favor food consumption at the time of inappropriate intake -- daytime in mice, nighttime in humans.

When a species' typical daily rhythm is thrown off, changes in metabolism also happen. For example, in people, night shift workers have an increased prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome, and patients with sleep disorders have a higher risk for developing obesity. Also, less sleep means more weight gain in healthy men and women.

Balancing Act

Balancing energy levels in the body requires integrating multiple signals between the central nervous system and outlying tissues, such as the liver and heart. Fat cells not only store and release energy but also communicate with the brain about the amount of stored energy via the hormone leptin. When leptin is secreted, it causes more energy to be used and less eating via pathways in the hypothalamus.

The Penn team found that only a handful of genes were altered when the clock was broken in fat cells and these governed how unsaturated fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were released into the blood stream. Interestingly, these are the same fatty acids that are typically associated with fish oils. Sure enough, levels of EPA and DHA were low in both plasma and in the hypothalamus at the time of inappropriate feeding.

"To our amazement, we were able to rescue the entire phenotype -- inappropriate fatty acid oscillation and gene expression in the hypothalamus, feeding pattern and obesity -- by supplementing EPA and DHA to the knock-out animals," notes Paschos.

The findings point to a role for the fat cell clock molecules in organizing energy regulation and the timing of eating by communicating with the hypothalamus, which ultimately affects stored energy and body weight.

Taken together, these studies emphasize the importance of the molecular clock as an orchestrator of metabolism and reflect a central role for fat cells in the integration of food intake and energy expenditure.

"Our findings show that short-term changes have an immediate effect on the rhythms of eating," says FitzGerald. "Over time, these changes lead to an increase in body weight. The conductor is indeed influenced by the percussionist."

(AP) ? From sea to shining sea, the nation paid tribute to its members of the armed services Sunday, both with somber traditions such as a Virginia wreath-laying ceremony attended by President Barack Obama to honor those who didn't make it back from active duty, and more lighthearted perks including red-carpet treatment at Las Vegas casinos for those who did.

In California, a long legal case drew to a close as a war memorial cross that had been deemed unconstitutional was being resurrected Sunday in the Mojave desert, capping a landmark case for veterans fighting similar battles on public lands.

Sunday marked the official commemoration of Veterans Day, but the federal holiday will be observed Monday.

___

President Barack Obama laid the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia and noted that this is the first Veterans Day in a decade with no American troops fighting and dying in Iraq, and that a decade of war in Afghanistan is coming to a close.

In a speech at the Memorial Amphitheater, he said America will never forget the sacrifice made by its veterans and their families.

"No ceremony or parade, no hug or handshake is enough to truly honor that service," the president said, adding that the country must commit every day "to serving you as well as you've served us."

He spoke of the Sept. 11 generation, "who stepped forward when the Towers fell, and in the years since have stepped into history, writing one of the greatest chapters in military service our country has ever known."

Over the next few years, he said, more than 1 million service members will make the transition to civilian life. "As they come home, it falls to us, their fellow citizens, to be there for them and their families, not just now but always."

Later, the president and his wife, first lady Michelle Obama, and Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, greeted families in the cemetery's Section 60, home to graves of service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

In California, a war memorial cross that once stood on a rocky hilltop in a national park before being deemed unconstitutional and ordered removed was being resurrected in the stunningly stark Mojave desert, marking the end of a longstanding legal dispute that had become entangled in patriotism and religion.

Henry Sandoz, who cared for the original cross as part of a promise to a dying World War I veteran, will rededicate a new, 7-foot steel cross on the same hilltop. The site is now in private hands as part of a land swap with the National Park Service that ended the legal battle.

"Judges and lawyers may have played their roles, but it was the veterans who earned this memorial, and it is for them it rises once more," said attorney Hiram Sasser of the Texas-based Liberty Institute, which represented veterans in the legal fight.

The settlement approved by a federal judge in April permitted the Park Service to turn over the acre of land known as Sunrise Rock to a Veteran of Foreign Wars post in Barstow and the Veterans Home of California-Barstow in exchange for five acres of donated property elsewhere in the 1.6 million acre preserve, about a four-hour drive east of Los Angeles.

The donated land was owned by Sandoz and his wife, Wanda, of Yucca Valley.

Sandoz has cared for the memorial as a promise to World War I veteran Riley Bembry, who with other shell-shocked vets went to the desert to help heal and erected a wooden cross on Sunrise Rock in 1934. It was later replaced with a cross made of steel pipes.

Then Sunrise Rock became part of the Mojave National Preserve in 1994, putting the Christian symbol on public land.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit in 2001 on behalf of a retired Park Service employee who argued the cross was unconstitutional on government property because of the separation of church and state, and federal courts ordered it removed.

Congress stepped in and ordered the land swap in 2003, but the courts rejected the transfer. The issue made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which in April 2010 refused to order the cross removed.

Storm-ravaged New York hosted the country's largest Veterans Day parade with turnout sparse along portions of the 30-block route along Fifth Avenue.

Standing in warm fall sunshine, officials said veterans should be honored and remembered more than just one day a year.

"This nation has a special obligation to take care of you," U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter told the crowd.

Several officials also made a note of mentioning Vietnam veterans. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

One Vietnam vet, 66-year-old Laurence Lynch of New York, said simply, "It's about time. It's about time."

Along a number of blocks of the parade route, just a few dozen spectators were lined along the barricades.

Candice and Jeffrey Stark stood nearly alone on one stretch, waving tiny American flags. "We are shocked," Candice Stark said. "Very disappointed and terribly appalled. Don't get me started!"

The Long Island couple was among the many residents displaced by the storm. The military has been very visible in the Sandy cleanup, so the Starks said they went to the parade to show their appreciation.

In an event befitting the nation's movie capital, the GI Film Festival Hollywood was launched this weekend in Los Angeles.

Films at the two-day festival highlighted the successes and sacrifices of American military personnel and the worldwide struggle for democracy, said festival co-founder Brandon Millett. Movies must have at least one main character, real or fictitious, who plays a military role with respect.

The festival's mission is to preserve the stories of American vets, he said.

"We noticed a lot of films portray GIs in an unfavorable light," said Millett, who founded the festival with his wife, a West point graduate. "We wanted to show the courage, the heroism and the sacrifice of men and women in uniform."

The festival showcased eight feature films culled from Millett's annual GI Film Festival held in Washington, D.C., in May, and debuted short films made by filmmakers who are veterans. It also recognized actors for their contributions to the U.S. Armed Forces and held a fundraising auction to benefit the Semper Fi Fund, which aids wounded Marines and their families.

"We show all aspects of the GI experience, in the arena of war and when they come home," Millett said.

Chicago's National Veterans Art Museum unveiled its latest exhibit called "Welcome Home" as it celebrated its grand reopening in a new location.

"'Welcome home' is the customary message given to soldiers returning from war," a museum statement said. "After this initial greeting, familiarity dissolves and the traumas of war surface. Veterans set out to relearn the world they left behind, and their family meets a transformed person."

The exhibit is part of a series that examines the ongoing war in Afghanistan and the rising need for mental health care for returning veterans

The museum has more than 2,500 works of veterans' art with the mission of inspiring greater understanding of the real impact of war with an emphasis on Vietnam. The museum focuses art inspired by combat and created by veterans.

A Las Vegas casino rolled out the red carpet for some 60 injured veterans in a special Veterans Day weekend trip.

The annual "Salute to the Troops" weekend started with free American Airlines flights for veterans and their guests and a welcoming committee of MGM Resorts employees Thursday.

Employees held welcome signs, waved flags and chanted "USA" as the honored guests arrived.

MGM Resorts is hosting the veterans free at the Mirage Hotel and Casino, and treating them to a variety of attractions and shows during the five-day trip that ends Monday.

Their itinerary includes a ventriloquist show, a trip to the Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage, and the Aviation Nation air show at Nellis Air Force Base.

(AP) ? The newly elected leader of Syria's main opposition bloc said in an interview Saturday that the international community should support those trying to topple President Bashar Assad's regime without any conditions and not link aid to an overhaul of the opposition leadership.

George Sabra, head of the Syrian National Council, said he and other opposition figures are disappointed with foreign backers.

"Unfortunately, we get nothing from them, except some statements, some encouragement" while Assad's allies "give the regime everything," Sabra told The Associated Press on the sidelines of a weeklong SNC conference in the Qatari capital of Doha. He said the Syrian opposition needs hundreds of millions of dollars in aid and weapons to defeat regime forces.

Sabra, 65, was heading an SNC delegation Saturday in talks with rival opposition groups on forging a new, broader opposition leadership group ? an idea promoted by Western and Arab backers of those trying to oust Assad.

The SNC has been reluctant to join such a group, fearing it would lose influence within a larger platform. Senior SNC figures suggested Saturday's meeting would be the start of several days of negotiations over the size and mission of such a group. They said they are willing to join a larger group, but that the details need to be worked out carefully.

The author of the plan, veteran dissident Riad Seif, has said the international community would quickly recognize a unified group and use it as a conduit for billions of dollars in aid to the uprising against Assad.

The outcome of the talks will be crucial not just for the SNC ? an Istanbul-based group widely seen as out of touch with activists on the ground and fighters dying on the battlefields in Syria ? but also for the future of the entire opposition.

In the interview, Sabra acknowledged that some of the criticism of the SNC was justified, but said that this should not serve as an excuse to hold up international aid.

"Don't hang (your) delay to provide Syrians what they need, what they want, on the neck of the opposition," he said, in a message to the international community.

"Let's say, we have our responsibility, no doubt about that, and we will carry this responsibility, but we need from the international community to carry their responsibility also," he said.

Sabra, a Christian and left-wing veteran dissident, spent eight years in Syrian jails in the 1980s and 1990s. He was jailed twice after the outbreak of the uprising against Assad in March 2011, and fled to Jordan on foot in the fall of 2011 to avoid further detention.

As a Christian, Sabra's election late Friday as the new SNC president, could help counter Western concerns about possible Islamist influence over the group.

Under the plan and if it is set up, the new, broader Syrian opposition would form a transitional government in rebel-held areas and presumably serve as a conduit for foreign aid to the opposition. The rebels' Western backers have declined to send weapons to the rebels, for fear they will fall into the wrong hands.

Syria's opposition says it needs weapons to break the military stalemate in Syria and defeat Assad. Asked Friday what he wants from the international community, Sabra said: "Weapons, weapons, weapons."

Fresno workplace shooting leaves two dead, three injured

[Updated at 1:45 p.m. ET]

A gunman has killed one person and injured three others at a Fresno, Calif. chicken processing plant, according to a number of news reports.

Police say the shooter then shot himself near scene. According to the FresnoBee.com, the gunman, identified as Lawrence Jones, 42, of Fresno and two of his co-workers he shot were taken to a hospital in critical condition.

KMPH-TV reports the rampage took place about 8:30 a.m. at Valley Protein, which produces various poultry meat products.

Fresno police told KMPH that the suspect walked into the business looking for a specific person. Reporter Liz Gonzalez says as many as 60 workers may have been inside at the time of the shooting, according to KMPH.

FresnoBee.com spoke to two witness who saw factory workers running from the plant. Roger Medina told the newspaper that he was in a nearby McDonald's when a man dressed in a meat cutter vest came rushing in.

"He said, 'There's a guy shooting people over there,' " said

Jesus Davila was at a bus stop when a factory employee ran up and yelled that a gunman was on the loose, according to the newspaper. Davila said he then heard a loud gunshot and saw the apparent gunman.

Davila told the Fresno Bee that said the meat factory worker told him that the gunman had just got out of jail.

"He said the guy was in nine years and he was crazy," Davila told the newspaper.

Android 41 update for original Galaxy Note may bring Nature UX, Air View and more

If fortune smiles upon original Galaxy Note owners, there's a good chance of finding an Android 4.1 update before year's end. Rather than just the usual suspects like Google Now, however, a recently leaked software build suggests that Samsung's original smartphone / tablet may receive some of the same features as the current Galaxy Note II. We've embedded a video after the break that reveals what could be in store, which includes the Nature UX, the ability to watch video previews with the S Pen (Air View) and the ability to view two apps at once (Multi-Window). Whether the features make it to the final build is anyone's guess, though we're certainly crossing our fingers. In the meantime, feel free to hop the break to see what's in store -- sorry that it's in French.

Check Out All These Ideas On Search Engine Optimization

The Internet is a hyper-competitive marketplace, so any Internet marketer worth his salt uses search engine optimization techniques to increase his traffic. People all over the world rely on search engines to help them locate information, find products, and learn about different brands. Follow the advice in this article, and soon your site will see more traffic than ever.

Using plurals in keywords is a good way to improve search engine hits. Stemming keywords is a common practice with search engines. If you chose a search term like ?accountant? for your keyword, your site may not be included in search results relating to ?accountants.? When you make the most of keyword stemming, you will choose the longest choice of the keyword offered. In this way, you will get the most return.

Search Engines

Think about adding a podcast to your website. Podcasts are audio or visual content, can be streamed live, and contain information in which the customer is interested. Podcasts are becoming very popular with both users and webmasters. You simply need to grab a web cam and microphone, and start recording. Search engines can pull up your podcasts based on descriptions of them.

To optimize the images on your site for search engines, always fill in the ?alt? tag with a relevant description. If an image doesn?t load or is blocked by a browser, these tags show instead. You have to remember that search engines take note of index alt tags, therefore the keywords in these tags help improve your page ranking.

All of the links on or associated with your site should include keyword phrases in their titles or anchor text. ? as anchor text. This will help the search engines see your links and additional keywords as being relevant, which will get you higher search rankings. Check your website to make sure that your internal links have proper keywords in their anchor text.

You can give your SEO a boost by using off-site linking to reputable websites. This is a very important part of linking. Search engines give more weight to relevant off-site linking than to internal links to a site?s own pages. In order to make your rank higher, you should look for link exchange opportunities to get links that lead back to your website.

If your site features a large number of videos, remember that search engine crawlers do not see video content, no matter how high it is in quality. You can work around this, though. Make sure to have a site map with a list of keyword rich video titles, so that search engines will be able to index your site properly.

A good rule of thumb with regards to META description tags is to make sure that every single tag for each page is unique. Not using different tags can mean lower search engine ratings.

You must research your keywords before attempting to optimize your site. Learn which keywords will be best for you to incorporate into your website. You should research what people are looking for when looking for products in your market and select your keywords from what are being used to search. In order to appear more on quality search engines, be sure to use this knowledge you have obtained.
