The HSUS Offers Tips for Protecting Gardens from Groundhogs this ...

January?30,?2013

Punxsutawney Phil will make headlines again on Groundhog Day, Feb. 2, and The Humane Society of the United States is encouraging people to celebrate the day by learning more about our wild neighbors and ways to peacefully coexist. As Phil comes out of his hole after a long winter sleep, groundhogs everywhere are reemerging in gardens and yards throughout the country.

?People are excited to see Phil on Feb. 2, but within weeks, some homeowners will complain about groundhogs eating flowers and garden vegetables,? said Laura Simon, field director of Wildlife & Habitat Protection community programs for The HSUS. ?With the right tools and a little tolerance, people can easily discourage unwanted groundhog activity in their gardens and peacefully coexist with them.?

Groundhogs ? also known as woodchucks ? hibernate from October through February and start breeding shortly thereafter. That means an abundance of groundhogs setting their sights on eating gardens, digging burrows and coming into conflict with their human neighbors.?

Simple solutions to keep groundhogs from hogging their way into your garden

  • Scare Them ? To temporarily discourage frequent visits to your garden, place objects in the area that will reflect sunlight and continually move in the breeze, such as tethered Mylar party balloons, ?animal scaring? balloons with faces and big eyes or dangling pieces of Mylar tape.
  • Exclude Them ? Since groundhogs do not like to climb unstable fences, installing a wobbly 3 to 4 foot-high mesh barrier around a garden keeps them away permanently. The HSUS recommends using regular green garden fencing, which comes in 16 gauge, 4-foot-tall mesh rolls. This mesh is available at most garden, hardware and home building stores. A trick for success when installing is to extend the bottom 12 inches of mesh outward, parallel to the ground, and pin this portion securely to the ground with landscaping staples. This ?apron? will discourage them from digging under the fence. Also, make sure the top portion of the mesh is not taut when securing to fence posts, so it wobbles when challenged, which discourages the groundhogs from climbing over.?

The HSUS Wild Neighbors Program promotes non-lethal means for resolving conflicts between people and wildlife and cultivates understanding and appreciation for wild animals?commonly found in cities and towns.

The program's book, Wild Neighbors: The Humane Approach to Living with Wildlife is a useful reference for individuals and communities faced with resolving encounters with wild animals who find their way into yards, gardens, houses, parks and playgrounds.?

Eagerness defines ASU baseball team

With a roster full of returning players from last year, as well as a freshman class ranked third in the nation, expectations in Tempe are sky high.

Among those returning are nine starters, including Team USA member and First Team All-American, Trevor Williams. Last season, Williams was the only pitcher in the Pac-12 with 12 wins. Other key players returning are infielder James McDonald, catcher Max Rossiter, and outfielder Trever Allen.

With the loss of pitcher Brady Rodgers, look for freshmen pitchers Ryan Kellogg and Brett Lilek to compete for the open spot in the starting rotation.

"We can talk a lot about our incoming class because yes, on paper they are a very strong group,? Esmay reflected. ?But also the strength for us here is the development of kids from one year to the next. It is the freshman that doesn't play very much to before you know it all Pac-12, like Joey DeMichele two seasons ago. We have to really understand that each of these players is a year older and a year stronger.

?This is where I feel there is not that big of separation. We aren't going to ask these freshmen to be these phenoms right away because I don't need them to be. We have got some guys that have been through this program and growing into this thing and they are ready. They are ready to be those guys and show the freshmen what they need to do. The competition level here has been huge, not only because of our young kids, but because of those that have grown in this program."

PITCHERS:

The most notable returning pitcher is junior Trevor Williams. Esmay has already declared Williams as the Friday starter, filling the void that Brady Rodgers left. Williams is coming off an impressive sophomore season. He was a First Team Pac-12 All-Conference selection, and finished the season with a 2.05 ERA, which was the third-best in the conference and lowest on the team among pitchers who made more than one start.

Williams struck out 59, second best on the team. Among pitchers who pitched more than thirty-five innings, he walked the fewest batters, with 13. Williams? 1.07 walks allowed per nine innings was 10th in Division I.

Senior Alex Blackford is ready to step up and provide some strength to the bullpen, as well as possibly getting a few starts. In 2012, Blackford made 19 appearances, including nine starts. He struck out a team, season, and career-high ten batters in seven innings against Northern Illinois. For the last month of the season, he was pegged as the Sunday starter. He allowed one run on three hits against Utah and allowed one hit and no runs while striking out five to give the Sun Devils the win on the road at Gonzaga.

One of the strongest arms in the bullpen, Matt Dunbar, is returning for his senior season. In 2012, Dunbar led the team with a 1.54 ERA. He was third on the team with 23 appearances and fifth in innings pitched with 35.

In his first career start vs. Texas Tech, Dunbar lasted three hits with one hit and no runs. He gave up one run on five hits in five innings across two games at Washington State and one hit and no runs in 4.1 innings across two appearances at Oregon State. When asked about Dunbar?s role this season, Esmay said he plans to keep using him in the eighth inning, but Dunbar may also see time as a closer.

Other pitchers expected to have a strong impact this season are sophomores Darin Gillies and Adam McCreery, as well as freshmen Ryan Kellogg and Brett Lilek.

Gillies made 13 appearances last season, including ten starts. He earned his first collegiate victory after giving up no earned runs on five hits in five innings in an 8-1 victory over USC.

It?s hard to overlook the 6?9? McCreery. He is a strong competitor in the battle for the role of Saturday or Sunday starter. McCreery was named the Sunday started last season and went 2-0 in five appearances before dealing with an injury. He came back as a reliever in the final game of the 2012 season and pitched 3.2 scoreless innings to help the Sun Devils rally and tie the game.

Lefties Lilek and Kellogg will also be looking to make a strong impact in their freshman years. Lilek was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 2012 MLB Draft, while Kellogg was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays.

CATCHERS:

Max Rossiter turned down going to the pros after the 2012 season and decided to return for his senior year. When asked why he decided to come back, Rossiter cited one reason. "I came back because I wanted to win a national championship? he said, ?and I feel like this team can do it. I had an opportunity to play pro ball but I grew up a Sun Devil fan and I want a taste of playoff baseball and to go to Omaha. Especially with a pitching staff like this, I was really excited to come back because we have some big arms.

?We also have some strong freshmen that came in too. With a mix of the new guys and old guys, we have a very deep and strong pitching staff. I have a really good feeling about the pitching staff and have no regrets. I am glad I came back."

In 2012, Rossiter was second on the team with a .326 batting average and fourth in slugging percentage at .449. He put together a team-best hitting streak with twelve games. Look for Rossiter to provide veteran presence on the team, especially to young catchers Nathaniel Causey and R.J. Ybarra.

INFIELDERS:

Redshirt Tucker Esmay, yes there is a relationship, appeared in 23 games in 2012, including two starts at second base. He was also used as a pinch runner and reserve second baseman.

Junior James McDonald is coming off a strong 2012 campaign. McDonald earned Pac-12 All-Conference honorable mention recognition. He started 55 games, including 32 in left field, 21 as a designated hitter, and two at third base. He was second in the Pac-12 in walks with 35. He was also third on the team with a .401 on base percentage. McDonald ranked in the top five on the team in runs scored, had eleven multi-hit games, and five multiple-RBI games. He ended the season on a 13-game reached base streak.

Another junior returning is Michael Benjamin, the son of current third base coach, Mike Benjamin. In 2012, Benjamin was third on the team with a .322 batting average and second on the team in on base percentage at .408. He saw action starting in 35 games at third base. He collected a team and season-high five hits against Winthrop. He recorded nine multi-hit games. Benjamin came alive in the final 16 games of the season, hitting .382 with twenty-one hits, 11 runs batted in, two home runs, and 11 runs scored.

Sophomore Drew Stankiewicz is looking to fill the role of Joey DeMichele in the infield. As a freshman, Stankiewicz, better known as ?Stankie? by his teammates, appeared in 31 games and started in 20, including sixteen at third base, two at shortstop, one at second base, and one as a designated hitter. He had three multi-hit games.

Players competing for more play time include sophomore Rouric Bridgewater, and freshmen Emilio Torrez, Dalton DiNatale, Jordan Aboites, and Tony DiMartino.

OUTFIELDERS:

Kasey Coffman had a successful sophomore season in 2012. He started 39 games, including 22 in left field and 17 in right. Coffman ranked second on the team with 11 stolen bases. He had a season-high three hits and scored a season-high three runs against UC Riverside. He was also led the team in hit-by-pitches with 13. Coffman also earned Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention honors.

The outspoken, redshirt Trever Allen will be looked at as a strong presence on the field. In 2012, he started 37 games in right field. Allen put together a team-best 12-game hitting streak. He had eleven multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI games. Allen started the season with at least one RBI in nine of the first fifteen games.

Redshirt junior Kyle Bilbrey, sophomore Jake Peevyhouse, and freshmen Johnny Sewald, Cullen O?Dwyer, David Graybill, and Christopher Beall are also all expected to see time in the outfield during the 2013 season.

***

Arizona State was ranked 16th in the nation according to the College Baseball Preseason Top 40 Poll. Looking at the stacked roster, one may argue they weren?t ranked high enough. Twelve players on the roster have been drafted by MLB teams at some point in their career, including six freshmen.

The defending College World Series champions are 90 miles away in Tucson, a fact that Sun Devil players are anything but downplaying as they use it for motivation.

?We (the Sun Devils) are playing with a chip on our shoulder,? Williams admitted. ?We?re ready to play them.?

"I feel like there is unsolved business there,? Rossiter stated. ?The big thing for us is that the Wildcats know that the last team to beat them was the Sun Devils, so they know it?s coming."

The Sun Devils have never shied away from compiling a challenging schedule, and aside from a Pac-12 slate that is likely to be grueling on its own with six of its members ranked in the preseason Top 25, ASU will also travel to Tennessee before playing Arkansas in the Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise.

"Our strong schedule is our commitment to get our guys exposed to as much as we possibly can before the postseason,? Esmay explained. ?We are going to know pretty quickly where we are sitting and how well these young kids are getting out of their diapers. They get used to going to Tennessee and understanding that not everybody loves the Sun Devils. You have to go on the road and hear that not everyone is that excited that you are there.

?This year's schedule is not backing down. It is a process of the season. The preseason is a process to get to the Pac-12 schedule. Then we get into the Pac-12 and it's a new season, and we try and get ready and make adjustments, and then hopefully the postseason is at the end. I think our non-conference schedule is going to give us an opportunity to get beat up, get back up and respond to some things that might not be as comfortable."

The Sun Devil skipper stressed that the strong chemistry of his team will help them get through the tough schedule, and that the veterans must take the younger guys ?under their wings? starting right now.

?At the end of the day, they realize it,? Esmay stated. ?We are going to need everybody at some point and everybody is working just as hard as everybody else and has the same responsibilities, so at the end of the day they have to feel like we are all in it together.

?It's not necessarily always the can't-miss product team, but the teams that really grind it out and enjoy being around each other, that find success at the end of the season."

Arizona State?s 2013 season kicks off with the annual alumni game taking place on February 9th at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium. Gates open at 11 a.m. and the event is free.

The team plays their first regular season game on February 15th at home against Bethune Cookman. First pitch is scheduled at 6:30 p.m.

My top 10 tips for long-term weight loss - Catherine Saxelby's ...

You don't want to lose muscle either as it is metabolically active (unlike fat) and is responsible for keeping your body's metabolism set high, so you can burn off more kilojoules (calories).

No magic bullet

Firstly don't waste your money on pills, herbal remedies or meal replacements. There are no magic foods or supplements which will dissolve away fat - not grapefruit, kelp, cider vinegar, chitosan, brindle berry or fucus. For LONG-TERM success, you have to learn to eat real food in a junk-food world - and that's not always easy.?

1. Think less fat - but NOT no fat

Cutting down on fat, especially the bad saturated fat, is still the way to reduce your kilojoule/calore intake. Fat is densely packed with kilojoules (calories), is easily overconsumed and tends to be stored more efficiently than either carbohydrate or protein. Stores of fat cannot be oxidised (burnt off) in the same way carbohydrate and protein can. But you don't have to go fat-free, nor is it healthy for your body. Stick to 1 tablespoon oil for cooking plus half an avocado or 1 tablespoon spread (soft butter/margarine) over the day. Plus a handful of nuts as a snack.

2. Keep alcohol to a minimum

Alcohol is concentrated form of kilojoules (calories) and diverts the body from oxidising other nutrients. Allow yourself 3 small drinks a week OR abstain during the week so you can relax on the weekend. A long drink made with a nip of spirits (rum, scotch, bourbon) topped up with soda water or diet soft drink is your lowest calorie option. You can sit on it and sip slowly.

3. Snack healthy

Four or five mini-meals a day can help "turn up" your body's metabolic rate, so you burn off fat faster. They also stop you getting overly hungry and reaching for quick grabs. But make your snacks healthy. If your idea of a snack is a biscuit or pastry, look for something healthier like yoghurt, fruit, crispbread and cheese.

4. Exercise regularly

There's no escaping it. People who exercise have less trouble with excess fat, feel healthier and maintain their lean muscle mass over the years. Any activity you enjoy and can maintain for 20-30 minutes without becoming too breathless is fine.

Power walking is one of the best ways to burn off fat. It costs nothing, requires no special equipment (except good walking shoes) and can be done at a time to suit yourself. Swimming, dancing, bicycling, skipping or gym classes are all beneficial ways to exercise. Any exercise is better than none at all!

It also helps to put more movement into your day e.g. use the stairs instead of the lift, walk to work or the shops.

5. Long-lasting carbohydrate

Choose carbohydrate foods that take longer to be digested and absorbed (called low GI carbs) - so you feel fuller for longer and hunger pangs are kept at bay. Slow-release types include pasta, legumes (beans, lentils), apples, pears, yoghurt, bran cereals and grainy breads.

6. Don't skip breakfast

Research shows breakfast "switches" on your body's metabolism and prevents you becoming ravenously hungry by 11am and tucking into pastries or hot chips. If you can't face food first thing in the morning, make sure you have a sandwich or smoothie mid-morning. And see if you can eat dinner earlier or eat less at night so you're actually hungry when you wake up (it's a nice healthy thing to wake up with a good appetite!).

7. Eat light at night

Avoid large meals late at night, which is the time when we are least active and excess kilojoules (calories) are readily converted to body fat. Fits in with breakfast above!

8. Slow down and eat mindfully

Slow down your rate of eating. Sit down to eat and stretch out your meal to last 20 minutes to allow the brain's appetite control centre to register that you are full. Read how to re-train yourself with my article 6 ways to eat more mindfully.

9. Add some protein

Lean protein foods have been shown to promote satiety (a feeling of fullness after a meal) which stops you picking. Lean beef, lamb, pork, chicken, fish as well as eggs, low-fat milks and yoghurts are all nutritious and good for dieters. Combining protein with slow-digesting carbohydrates (like pasta with beef strips) helps ensure satisfaction, something many diets lack.

10. Fill up on fibre

While the Glycemic Index is trendy, don't ignore high-fibre carbs that can create the same feeling of fullness AND help 'flush out' kilojoules out of your system.? For dieters, the best high-fibre additions are 2 tablespoons bran cereal sprinkled over your usual cereal or muesli OR a small 100g can baked beans when you need a quick light meal OR high-fibre vegetables like cabbage, Brussels sprouts, spinach and corn on the cob.

Of couse, it's good to boost your intake of fibre from all food groups including wholemeal breads, beans and fruit. The high-fibre additions above are the ones that are easiest to slot into a busy schedule. In the old days, we nutritionists used to say fibre makes food "bulkier", so you feel fuller on less. That still holds true today. Think of white bread compared to a chewy grainy bread and you'll get it instantly!

New semiconductor research may extend integrated circuit battery life 10-fold

Jan. 30, 2013 ? Researchers at Rochester Institute of Technology, international semiconductor consortium SEMATECH and Texas State University have demonstrated that use of new methods and materials for building integrated circuits can reduce power -- extending battery life to 10 times longer for mobile applications compared to conventional transistors.

The key to the breakthrough is a tunneling field effect transistor. Transistors are switches that control the movement of electrons through material to conduct the electrical currents needed to run circuits. Unlike standard transistors, which are like driving a car over a hill, the tunneling field effect transistor is more like tunneling through a hill, says Sean Rommel, associate professor of electrical and microelectronic engineering.

"The tunneling field effect transistors have not yet demonstrated a sufficiently large drive current to make it a practical replacement for current transistor technology," Rommel says, "but this work conclusively established the largest tunneling current ever experimentally demonstrated, answering a key question about the viability of tunneling field effect transistor technology."

Rommel worked with David Pawlik, Brian Romanczyk and Paul Thomas, three graduate students in the microelectronic engineering and microsystems engineering programs at RIT. Along with colleagues from SEMATECH and Texas State University, the team presented the breakthrough findings at the International Electron Devices Meeting in San Francisco this past December.

In order to accurately observe and quantify these current levels, a fabrication and testing procedure was performed at RIT. Pawlik developed a process to build and test vertical Esaki tunnel diodes smaller than 120 nanometers in diameter, Rommel explains. This procedure allowed the researchers to measure hundreds of diodes per sample. Because of the nanometer-scale devices tested, the researchers were able to experimentally observe currents substantially larger than any previously reported tunneling currents.

Esaki tunnel diodes, discovered in 1957 and the first quantum devices, were used to create a map showing output tunnel currents for a given set of material systems and parameters. For the first time, researchers have a single reference to which they can compare results from the micro- to the mega-ampere range, Rommel adds.

"This work may be used by others in designing higher performance tunneling field effect transistors which may enable future low power integrated circuits for your mobile device," he says.

The team's findings in the area of developing high performance, low-power electronic devices are also detailed in the paper, "Benchmarking and Improving III-V Esaki Diode Performance with a Record 2.2 MA cm2 Current Density to Enhance Tunneling Field-Effect Transistor Drive Current." The National Science Foundation, SEMATECH and RIT's Office of the Vice President of Research sponsor the work.

Texas woman's execution halted; DA won't appeal

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) ? The first woman scheduled to be executed in the U.S. since 2010 won a reprieve Tuesday, mere hours before she was scheduled to be taken to the Texas death chamber.

State District Judge Larry Mitchell, in Dallas, rescheduled Kimberly McCarthy's punishment for April 3 so lawyers for the former nursing home therapist could have more time to pursue an appeal focused on whether her predominantly white jury was improperly selected on the basis of race. McCarthy is black.

Dallas County prosecutors, who initially contested the motion to reschedule, chose to not appeal the ruling.

District Attorney Craig Watkins said the 60-day delay was "appropriate." If no irregularities are discovered, he said he'd move forward with the execution.

"We want to make sure everything is done correctly," he said.

The 51-year-old McCarthy was convicted and sent to death row for the 1997 stabbing, beating and robbery of a 71-year-old neighbor. She learned of the reprieve less than five hours before she was scheduled for lethal injection, already in a small holding cell a few feet from the death chamber at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Huntsville Unit.

"I'm happy right now over that," she told prison agency spokesman John Hurt. "There's still work to be done on my case."

Hurt said McCarthy was in good spirits and "didn't seem tense or nervous" even before she learned she would live.

A Dallas County jury convicted her of killing neighbor Dorothy Booth at the retired college psychology professor's home in Lancaster, about 15 miles south of Dallas.

"We are very pleased that we will now have an opportunity to present evidence of discrimination in the selection of the jury that sentenced Kimberly McCarthy to death," said Maurie Levin, a University of Texas law professor and McCarthy's lawyer.

"Of the twelve jurors seated at trial, all were white, except one, and eligible non-white jurors were excluded from serving by the state. ... These facts must be understood in the context of the troubling and long-standing history of racial discrimination in jury selection in Dallas County, including at the time of Ms. McCarthy's trial," Levin said.

Investigators said Booth had agreed to give McCarthy a cup of sugar before she was attacked with a butcher knife and candelabra. Booth's finger also was severed so McCarthy could take her wedding ring. It was among three slayings linked to McCarthy, who'd been addicted to crack cocaine.

McCarthy would have been the 13th woman executed in the U.S. and the fourth in Texas, the nation's busiest death penalty state, since the Supreme Court allowed capital punishment to resume in 1976. In that same time period, more than 1,300 male inmates have been executed nationwide.

Federal Bureau of Justice Statistics compiled from 1980 through 2008 show women make up about 10 percent of homicide offenders nationwide. According to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, 3,146 people were on the nation's death rows as of Oct. 1, and only 63 ? 2 percent ? were women.

Fly Or Die: Temple Run 2

Screen Shot 2013-01-29 at 12.13.20 PMTemple Run was one of the biggest games of 2012, so it only makes sense that the guys from Imangi Studios would create a sequel. Since launching on January 17, the app has seen some solid success, with over 6 million downloads on opening day alone. This could be thanks in part to the new Temple Run course, which includes ropes, train cars, curves, stairs and hills. However, Temple Run 2 still keeps the same familiar gameplay we've come to know and love.

If You Only Do 3 Things to Advance Your Career... | The Way ...

The most successful professional women do these three things?

Through our research and interviews with hundreds women the around the world, we?ve found the most successful professional women do these three things:

  1. They are BOLD.
  2. They promote themselves.
  3. They build a strong support network.

These attributes may seem simple but can be daunting for many. Keep reading for practical tips, encouragement and examples in these three areas. A more confident you awaits!

FIRST: GET BOLD

Being bold can mean many things, and it certainly depends on the person, workplace, country, and circumstance. For business women who operate in a myriad of cultures with different societal norms and expectations, being bold first starts with the willingness to do so! Some good examples include:

  • Be courageous in spite of difficulties, obstacles or fears.
  • Do not worry unduly about mistakes you will make and failures you will have.
  • Take good calculated risks.
  • Step out in your workplace. Be visible and notable.
  • Say what?s on your mind.
  • Respectfully challenge the status quo.
  • Find ways to bend, work around or if necessary even break the rules that govern what women can or should do professionally or in business.
  • Dream, explore, think and act beyond the usual limits of conventional thought or action.

More stories and advice to inspire your inner boldness:

SECOND: PROMOTE YOURSELF

Research indicates that one of the key factors that helps women advance their careers and businesses is their willingness to promote themselves.

?Women who are more proactive self-promoters are better able to advance their careers and increase their salaries, and are overall more professionally satisfied, than women who were less likely to make their achievements visible,? said Ilene H. Lang, president and CEO of Catalyst, a researched based organization expanding opportunities for women and business.

Since we know you are incredible and deserving of all the success in the world, we encourage you to please, be proactive in self-promotion. This means:

  • Raise your hand! Step up to challenging assignments or opportunities.
  • Make your achievements known.
  • Ask for that raise.
  • Initiate projects that will advance the role and visibility of your company.
  • Take credit for your good and impressive work.
  • Track your accomplishments (you can use this on your CV/resume, in a job review, when you are up for a promotion, etc).

More advice and examples to help you promote yourself:

THIRD: BUILD YOUR SUPPORT

Successful women build the right support base through mentors, a sponsor, and networks.

Mentors are those with whom you have good chemistry, those who help you gain insights about yourself and who hopefully give you good career advice. A sponsor works with you to identify the right next move and helps you to get it. This might be a senior manager with influence at your company who has the ability to get you considered for promising opportunities, challenging assignments, and promotions. The critical distinguishing characteristics of a sponsor are: seniority, influence, and power. And networks can come in many forms: whether personal or professional, they serve as connections to help you advance, provide leads and opportunities for growth, and can encourage and support you.

But it is up to you to harness the power of mentors, a sponsor, and networks! It takes work to cultivate the right support, but it will be fruitful and you and your career will be better for it.?

Helpful articles to further build your support:

Sponsors

Mentors

Networking

We?re here for you!

Casey Anthony files for bankruptcy protection

After a court acquitted her of murder charges, Casey Anthony is filing for bankruptcy, saying she's only worth $1,100 and still owes close to $800,000 to her lawyers and law enforcement officials.

Anthony owes about $792,000 -- most of it to her defense attorney, according to a Chapter 7 petition filed Friday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, The Associated Press reported.

She also faces three civil lawsuits stemming from the disappearance of her daughter, Caylee Marie, ?the Orlando Sentinel reported.?The 2-year-old girl was reported missing in July 2008 and her body was found that December near the home of Casey Anthony's parents in the Orlando area.

Anthony was found not guilty of murder in July 2011 but was convicted of lying about the child's disappearance. She was sentenced to time served, and on Friday an appeals court struck down two of the lying convictions.

Anthony claimed that a babysitter had kidnapped Caylee, and a woman with the same name is suing for defamation, as is the former meter reader who found the body -- he says Anthony's attorneys damaged him by painting him as a possible killer.

The third suit is by Texas EquuSearch, a search and rescue organization, which says it spent more than $100,000 searching for Caylee.

Anthony's bankruptcy filing said she had only $1,084; here are her main debts, according to the Sentinel report:

  • About $500,000 to defense attorney Jose Baez
  • $145,660.21:?Orange County Sheriff's Office
  • $68,540: Internal Revenue Service
  • $61,505: Florida Department of Law Enforcement
  • $10,283.90: to the Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation?

South Korea central bank questions Bank of Japan easing

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - South Korea's central bank governor on Saturday questioned the efficacy of Japan's decision to ease monetary policy, saying its decision to start buying assets in 2014 could have unintended long-term consequences.

The move by the Bank of Japan was also done in a hasty manner and would lead to large movements in the foreign exchange market, said Bank of Korea Governor Kim Chong-soo.

"What they did created a couple of problems," Kim said in an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos. "One is that the level (of the currency) is affected, and the pace of change is also a problem. They did it too hastily."

Key for the Bank of Korea is a stable exchange rate, Kim added.

The yen has come under pressure since reports on Thursday quoted Japan's deputy economy minister, Yasutoshi Nishimura, as saying the yen's decline is not over, and that a dollar/yen level of 100 would not be a concern.

The Japanese currency is now trading around a 2-1/2 year low against the dollar at around 90 yen, as the market remained focused on Japan's pursuit of a reflationary economic policy.

Talk about a currency war has dominated discussions at the Swiss ski resort of Davos this week, with many central bankers and business executives questioning the wisdom of continuing an easy money policy.

Kim's comments come as top executives at Japanese companies say that the Bank of Japan has been too slow in responding to the yen's rise after the financial crisis.

"There is no explanation why the Japanese currency should appreciate 40 percent to the dollar after the financial crisis, while the won decreased compared to the dollar," said Nissan's Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn on Friday.

Chubby Blog: [Revisit] De Luca

I'm the kind of person who has been having issues with weight ever since I was little.. and perhaps that's the main reason that I always *try* to keep my eating portion less than the average people.. gosh, how I envy you who can eat anything without gaining even an ounce of fat.. I easily gain weight and that's may be why I never had a full meal, as far as I can remember..?

however, when it's Christmas season, there will always be an exception.. especially when De Luca?offered a lunch package for Rp98,000++.. I fell into temptation and surrender right away.. the package consisted of soup of the day, main course (with several options), fresh fruits and drink (mineral water/lemon tea/hot tea).. so let's the full meal begins..?

I started by ordering hot tea.. well, a little bitterness and warmth in a cup of tea is necessary to accompany the upcoming meal.. I love the cup and saucer, really.. where can I buy them? then along came a bowl of free bread, typical served in Italian restaurant.. I love the fact that the bread were still warm and I usually dip the bread in the mixture of olive oil and balsamic vinegar.. just a tiny bit as too much bread will end up ruining your appetite..

not so long after, the soup came.. it was minestrone vegetable soup with beef stock.. minestrone?is Italian thick soup, quite famous apparently.. well, De Luca's minestrone?was not too thick but somehow just the right consistency for my liking.. it tasted really refreshing with very fresh condiments.. I remember finding cucumber, tomatoes, onions, black olives and pumpkin.. it was a beautiful soup with very generous and well-cooked fillings..?

onto the main course, the star of the day.. roasted?rosemary chicken served with mashed potatoes and mix grilled vegetables.. why did I chose this? well, it's the most expensive menu of the main course options hihihi.. I'm typical girl who will bother to look at the price tag to determine my choice haha.. when it came, it looked really tempting.. two pieces of perfectly grilled chicken on top of tomato puree and mashed potatoes, beautifully arranged with grilled veggies.. what not to love about this dish's appearance? the moment of truth, the taste.. the chicken was very tender and well seasoned.. it went really well with the tomato puree and the still-crunchy veggies.. the mashed potato was silky and smooth, just the way I would have want it.. I didn't find it hard to finish the whole, big plate *big grin*

our lovely meal was closed with a plate of fresh fruits, consisted of red melon, watermelon and cherry.. such a perfect meal.. my tummy was really happy and it just boost my mood for the rest of the day..

overall, it was a good meal.. I love everything about it.. but definitely would come back for more Rosemary chicken.. as for now, do you have any experience eating a full-meal yourself? come and share it with me.. meanwhile, follow my twitter for more food!

SEO services enhance your site ranking and channelizing site traffic ...

Life insurance is not easy to shop for. There are so many providers and so many options that it is all too easy to get lost. A little research can equip you to find your way. This article will present a few handy tips to keep you on the right track to good life insurance deals.

When it comes to Life Insurance, purchase it when you are young. Typically, a younger person is in good general health, so you will be able to lock in a great rate for the length of the policy. As a person gets older, they start to present more of a risk to an insurance company, and not only will the premium be more but, you may be denied coverage entirely.

If you would like more than one life insurance policy, whether you don't qualify for a policy of a high amount or because you would like extra coverage, you may want to think about the purchase of a group life insurance policy. This could be a great deal cheaper than purchasing several different policies, and can suit your needs just as well if not better.

Purchase life insurance so your family will not have to pay for your funeral costs. You may have all of your retirement needs provided for, but if there is not much left once you die, someone in your family will need to pay for funeral services and related costs. A simple, inexpensive life insurance policy can guarantee that funds will be available to take care of your funeral and not put undue financial stress on any family members.

If your life insurance needs change, consider getting a rider instead of purchasing an additional policy. A rider adds on to what you already have and typically does not cost as much money as getting another policy. This may not be true, however, if you are in very good health, so make sure to do your research.

Most life insurance policies are long term contracts. This means that once you sign the contract, you have a responsibility to make payments toward your policy. Therefore, when you are obtaining life insurance, make sure you have a firm understanding of your needs, what you are receiving and that you will be able to afford your payments. If there is anything you do not understand, do not contract yourself to the policy. Ask questions first.

Do your research. There are many different companies that sell life insurance as well as many different rating systems for each company. Take a look at the pros and cons of each as well as shop around for quotes. This will ensure that you are making the right choice with such a large decision.

When considering life insurance, be sure to look outside what your employer provides. While this may be easier and you may assume they are providing what is best for you, it is not always the case. Make sure that they rates and coverage are competitive or better than other offers that you could go with.

Make sure to get quotes on different levels of policies. Many insurance companies offer breaks at different levels of coverage that could wind up saving you money. Just because you've decided that 175,000 is all the coverage you need, doesn't mean you shouldn't get quoted on other levels just in case.

There is almost always a better deal out there when it comes to life insurance. It may not be easy to find or take advantage of. Learning is the key to zeroing in on the best deals. Hopefully you are a little better informed after reading this article, and your life insurance hunt will be a little more successful.

Egyptian mummy's elaborate hairstyle revealed in 3-D

Nearly 2,000 years ago, at a time when Egypt was under the control of the Roman Empire, a young woman with an elaborate hairstyle was laid to rest only yards away from a king's pyramid, researchers report.

She was 5 feet 2 inches in height, around age 20 when she died, and was buried in a decorated coffin whose face is gilded with gold. A nearby pyramid, at a site called Hawara, was built about 2 millennia before her lifetime. The location of her burial is known from archival notes. ?

High-resolution CT scans reveal that, before she was buried, her hair was dressed in an elaborate hairstyle.

"The mummy's hair is readily appreciable, with longer strands at the middle of the scalp drawn back into twists or plaits that were then wound into a tutulus, or chignon at the vertex (crown) of the head," writes a research team in a paper published recently in the journal RSNA RadioGraphics. They note that it was a popular hairstyle at the time, which may have been inspired by a Roman empress, Faustina I, who lived in the second century. [ See Photos of Egyptian Mummy's Reconstruction ]

Today, thanks to research and reconstruction work that includes high-resolution CT scans, anthropological analysis, 3-D printing and facial reconstruction drawing, this woman, along with two other mummies, are being brought back to life. Their three-dimensional faces and hair, carefully reconstructed by professional forensic artist Victoria Lywood, of John Abbott College, are set to be revealed tomorrow (Jan. 25) at the Redpath Museum at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

In pictures sent to LiveScience the reconstructions appear vividly real in every aspect, from the tone of their muscles to the color and style of their hair. It looks like they could be people living today.

"They are three human Egyptian mummies that have been trapped in the manner they held when laid to rest nearly 2,000 years ago. And now we can reveal what they might have looked like," the team writes in a press release.? All three mummies were donated to the Redpath Museum in the 19th century.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Winter's big chill means fewer summer bugs

As the bitter cold in the northeastern United States keeps even hardy New Hampshire skiers off the slopes, there?s at least one potential upside to the cold snap: fewer mosquitoes come summer, according to an entomologist riding out the cold in upstate New York.

    2. Brains vs. immunity: Genes hint at tug of war
    3. Study: Fracking wastewater could be too much
    4. Shrinking proton: Particle is smaller than thought

While two scientific papers have recently been published on them, and their reconstructed faces are set to be unveiled, there are still plenty of mysteries for Egyptologists to tackle. For instance, when researchers scanned the woman they found three puncture marks, each about an eighth of an inch (3-4 millimeters) across, on the right side of her abdominal wall, wounds that may have killed her, leading to the question ? how did she get them???

"These wounds were believed to have occurred either before or shortly after death," the researchers write in their RadioGraphics paper, "although these CT findings are far from conclusive, it is possible that the punctures are related to the cause of death."

The 'matron'
Another mummy, dubbed the "white-haired matron," is of a woman who lived long enough to see her hair go gray, likely passing away sometime between the ages of 30 and 50. Radiocarbon dating indicates that she lived late in the time of Roman rule (A.D. 230-380), when Christianity was growing in Egypt and mummification was soon to go out of style. At 5 foot 3 inches, she was relatively tall for her time, and museum records indicate that she was found somewhere in the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes (modern-day Luxor).

She suffered from a problem quite common in ancient Egypt ? bad, and rather painful, teeth. "Thecondition of the teeth of (the mummy) was poor," the team writes in the RadioGraphics paper, noting that she was missing several of them and that a large cavity, between two teeth, was visible along with several abscesses.

Theban male
The third reconstructed mummy lived a few centuries earlier than the other two, at a time when a dynasty of Greek kings ruled Egypt. If he and the matron could talk, they could sympathize with each other?s dental problems. [ Mummy Melodrama: 9 Secrets of Otzi the Iceman ]

The 5-foot-4-inch male mummy had numerous cavities, including one that caused a sinus infection, possibly killing him. His condition was so bad that in his final days he had a form of linen "packing," dipped in medicine, inserted into one of his cavities. According to records he also was found in Thebes, with CT scans showing that he died relatively young, likely in his 20s or early 30s.

Western University researcher Andrew Wade, a leading member of the team, said at a recent Egyptology symposium in Toronto that the development of high-resolution CT scans has played a key role in advancing the study of Egyptian mummies, including these three individuals, unveiling tiny details that help bring their past to life.?

"The high spatial and contrast resolution of the last decade of CT studies of mummies has allowed us to examine the paleo-anatomic minutiae (of mummies)," he said.

Is your craft stash creeping out of the craft room?or the boxes under your bed?and slowly taking over your home? First, rest assured that you?re not alone. Second, you?ll definitely want to check out this roundup of 100 dollar store home organization ideas from Jessica at Mad in Crafts!

There are any number of excuses I can make for why I haven?t taken the time to organize our house: not enough time to do it all, don?t know where to start, organizational supplies are too expensive, etc. It?s easy to get discouraged and quit before I am even started. But the truth is, the supplies to get an entire house in order don?t have to cost a small fortune. Most of them can be found right at the local dollar store.

To prove this to myself, and to you, I took a trip to my local Dollar Tree. ONE trip, no going back for forgotten items or things they didn?t have in stock. I brought along my iPod and took photos of all the supplies they carry that can be used to get a house in order.

Ready to get your craft room?or maybe even your whole house?in order? Head over to Mad in Crafts to check out Jessica?s full collection of links, ideas, and tips!

How Boehner Tamed an Unruly GOP Caucus

John Boehner is finally learning how to tame the rebellious House GOP caucus. The passage on Wednesday of a measure allowing the Treasury to keep borrowing money until May 19 warded off the risk of a debt default that could have been politically disastrous for Republicans. And it marked a win for the House speaker, who managed to rally his party behind the legislation only weeks after suffering embarrassing setbacks during the fiscal-cliff standoff and after narrowly surviving a revolt in the caucus earlier this month.

But the victory came at a price. Boehner and other GOP leaders have embraced a stark budget austerity that is winning plaudits with conservatives but may prove politically risky for the party, because it would require deep cuts in popular social programs such as Medicare, even as the GOP remains adamantly opposed to raising additional tax revenue from the rich.

The budget austerity will guide the GOP's approach to a series of clashes in the coming months with President Obama and congressional Democrats.

What exactly did Boehner have to promise fellow Republicans for their support on the debt-limit measure?

The commitments he?s made to rank-and-file members regarding the "sequester" cuts set to hit March 1, along with another short-term spending bill later in the month needed to keep government funded, will come due then. More significant is that Boehner has committed to writing a House budget that will erase the nation?s annual deficits within 10 years.

"That?s going to be pretty damn tough,? said William Hoagland, senior vice president of the Washington-based Bipartisan Policy Center. It will be especially hard if Boehner tries to do so without allowing more tax revenue to be put on the table. Effectively, then, that would require a ?scorched earth? policy on entitlements and other spending, Hoagland said.

At least for now, Wednesday?s vote to temporarily suspend the debt ceiling provided Boehner with a respite from his recent woes. The tumult of the fiscal cliff led to questions about whether he had lost control of his own GOP conference.

Those embarrassments included his having to scrap his ?Plan B? legislation on the fiscal cliff and later being forced to rely more on Democrats than his own party members to get passage of both the final fiscal-cliff deal and then a Hurricane Sandy relief bill. Much of this reflected lasting anger among conservatives over Boehner?s deals with Obama and the Democratic-led Senate last session. The prevailing view among many conservative House members is that he has been too willing to compromise and has caved in too easily.

The tension boiled over on the first day of the new Congress when some conservatives tried to oust Boehner as speaker. The Ohio Republican survived that rebellion, narrowly. Just seven more Republican defections could have blocked him from getting the 214 votes needed, a simple majority of the lawmakers who voted.

Many of the members in the dump-Boehner faction seemed ready over the weekend to reject the debt-ceiling increase, which would have once again put the speaker against the ropes.

But instead, this bill was passed 285-144, largely on the backs of 199 of Boehner?s fellow Republicans. In fact, Republicans lined up nearly 6-to-1 in support of the measure. Just 33 of them ended up opposing it--and many of those only after passage became assured during the vote-counting.

Senate Democrats plan to take up the measure in coming days.

Meanwhile, Boehner and other Republicans are playing down the bill?s main purpose--the debt-limit increase--by emphasizing its provision to force the Senate to pass a budget plan this spring for the first time in four years, or see members? pay withheld. In fact, the name they?ve given the measure is the ?No Budget, No Pay Act.?

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., in a statement, opined that Boehner had to ?add a gimmick or two to get their bill past the tea party.? But he noted that Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray, D-Wash., had already announced earlier in the day the Senate would move a budget resolution through committee and to the floor this year.

Even so, Reid said he wants to ?give credit where credit is due, and thank Speaker Boehner for his leadership here in defusing another fight over the debt ceiling.?

In fact, Boehner and other top House Republican leaders were laying the groundwork for Wednesday?s vote even before the House GOP gathered last week for its annual issues and policy retreat in Williamsburg, Va.

The hurdle was to sell the almost contrary idea of temporarily allowing more debt--as a necessary strategic step in order to allow more time to take on the nation?s skyrocketing debt problem.

To get there, House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers, R-Ky., explained to National Journal on Wednesday that Boehner and other House GOP leaders promised rank-and-file members they would stick to the cuts agreed to in the sequestration process, which on March 1 are to lower 2013 discretionary spending to $974 trillion unless Democrats agree to mandatory cuts as a replacement.

Rogers said Boehner has promised the sequestration cut, which is split evenly between military and discretionary domestic spending, ?will stay in effect unless it shall be replaced by other spending of equal size from other parts of the budget.? And he said Boehner has promised that the $974 billion figure will also be reflected in the spending measure needed later in March to keep government running for the remainder of the year.

But ?Obama and congressional Democrats are insisting that such deficit-reduction maneuvers also include new tax revenues, and so the upcoming fights over the sequester and how to keep government running are likely to represent the bigger battles ahead for Boehner, as opposed to Wednesday?s temporary debt-ceiling vote.

On top of that, Boehner himself underscored in a statement that the House is committed to a policy of balancing the budget within 10 years.

If that is the deal Boehner and Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., have made with conservatives, then Steve Bell, of the Bipartisan Policy Center, said, ?I foresee nothing but really serious difficulties for Boehner and the Republican Party in the years ahead.?

?What I can tell you as a practical matter is what will have to happen [in cuts] to the domestic and entitlement areas will simply be too much even for the vast majority of the Republican conference to accept,? said Bell.

For now, top House Republican aides seemed to be basking in the view that Boehner is gaining some traction with his victory in Wednesday?s vote--and in what appears to be a failed effort by top Democrats, who had urged their members not to vote for the bill.
