(CNN) -- A small plane was intercepted and escorted by a fighter jet to a Florida airport Saturday after violating temporary flight restrictions set up for President Obama's visit, according to a military spokesman. The Cessna 152 entered the restricted airspace near the resort where the president is staying in Palm City, according to Army Lt. Col. Mike Humphreys.
The military's North American Aerospace Defense Command sent a F-16 fighter jet and a Coast Guard helicopter to intercept the plane, he said.
The F-16 flew with the plane until it landed at Witham Field in nearby Stuart. The plane was met by local officials and the U.S. Secret Service, and the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.
Small aircraft occasionally enter the areas where flight is temporarily restricted when the president travels.
A year ago Saturday a Cessna 182 was intercepted over Obama's airspace in Los Angeles. That plane was found to be carrying 10 kilograms of what appeared to be marijuana, according to a law enforcement official.
