A man on the run after slashing a Nelson man's throat planned to bash and ''probably kill'' a backpacker in Picton to get a ferry ticket to escape police.
Steven Keith Pengelly, 39, of Wellington, was sentenced in the High Court in Nelson yesterday after earlier admitting the attempted murder of Washington Valley man Mark Wells in October.
Pengelly also admitted two charges of threatening to kill, theft, obtaining by deception and breaching his release conditions.
Further details of the bloody attack and Pengelly's ''pathological enthusiasm for the infliction of injuries on others'' were revealed in court yesterday.
Justice Stephen Kos sentenced Pengelly to eight years, eight months in jail, and ordered that he serve a minimum of four years, four months.
Justice Kos said he feared Pengelly would end up back in jail again for violent offending if he did not help to address his condition.
However, it would be up to the Department of Corrections and probation to ensure Pengelly got the help he needed.
Pengelly was released from Rimutaka Prison in February last year.
He was paroled to an address in the Lower Hutt suburb of Naenae but was missing from that address when he offended in Nelson.
Justice Kos said Pengelly met Wells during a ''South Island odyssey'' at the Nelson Night shelter several weeks earlier.
On October 11 he arrived at Wells' rented house, with a female associate and slept on the couch.
The next morning the trio bought two casks of wine and started drinking.
At lunchtime Pengelly started becoming aggressive. He confronted a flatmate of Wells who had not been drinking and left as he felt threatened. Another visitor also left due to Pengelly's aggressive behaviour.
Later that afternoon Pengelly punched Wells three times in the face. Wells left the room, and did not fight back. He was followed into the kitchen by Pengelly who punched him in the face causing his nose to bleed.
Pengelly then picked up a vegetable knife, but put it back down picking up a larger serrated-edge bread knife.
He then went in search of Wells who by now was kneeling leaning over the toilet so the blood from his nose went into the bowl.
Pengelly told Wells he was going to kill him, pulled his head back so it was facing upwards and slit his throat.
Wells grabbed a towel and there was blood all over the bathroom.
Pengelly told Wells to clean up his blood and started pushing him around the bathroom.
Wells told police it was like Pengelly enjoyed seeing him bleed. He managed to stagger to the dairy where he got emergency help and was sent straight to surgery.
Wells' injuries were serious, he lost considerable blood and the deep cut left his windpipe tendons, muscles and veins fully exposed. It was fortunate it did not hit his carotid artery. It required 20 stitches to fix.
Justice Kos said after Wells left Pengelly went back to a bedroom and had sex with his female associate, only leaving the flat when he heard sirens.
He fled to Blenheim and slept in a public toilet the first night. The second night he was picked up by an unsuspecting family who cared for him.
The following morning he hitch-hiked to Picton and was picked up by police near the marina on October 14.
He told police on the way back to Nelson police station he had been stalking a backpacker tourist with the intention of rolling him for cash and valuables to get a ferry ticket.
He said he had decided to bash the tourist in the head and would probably have needed to kill him. The other charges related to Pengelly ripping off an 88-year-old woman in Auckland who was the mother of a man he had been in prison with.
He also admitted threatening to kill ex-partners via threatening text messages, which were so serious the woman went into hiding.
Justice Kos said Pengelly had serious anger issues and lost control when angry he also had mental health issues and a head injury.
He had no fixed abode, no employment and had been in and out of prison. He had been subject to physical violence and sexual abuse from an early age. He described himself as a loner although he had previously belonged to the Black Power.
He started sniffing petrol at age nine and was addicted to opiates by his mid-teens. He was still on the methadone programme. He had done 358 hours of treatment in the high risk persons programme, and was of average intelligence with strong psychopathic traits.
He knew what he was doing when he slit Wells' throat, but still believed he was morally right.
Crown prosecutor Mark O'Donoghue said Pengelly was a time bomb who posed a serious risk to public safety and the community needed to be protected from him.
Lawyer Tony Bamford said Pengelly had expressed genuine bewilderment and concern about his behaviour and wanted help.
