Free-agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski was expected to meet with Texas Rangers officials on Tuesday, two major league sources tell ESPNChicago.com's Bruce Levine.

Pierzynski, who turns 36 on Dec. 30, had 27 homers and 77 RBIs in 2012 with the Chicago White Sox. The 27 homers were a career high and the 77 RBIs tied a career high set in 2004 when he was in San Francisco. He made $6 million last season.

Pierzynski would give the Rangers a veteran bat in the lineup and behind the plate. He's also a left-handed hitter with power, which wouldn't be a bad thing for a right-handed heavy team that just watched Josh Hamilton, a left-handed power bat, sign with the Angels.

The Rangers are still trying to fill a hole at one of the catching spots. They re-signed Geovany Soto, but Mike Napoli agreed to terms with the Boston Red Sox (that deal has still not been finalized).

Richard Durrett joined ESPNDallas.com in September 2009. He writes about colleges, the Dallas Stars and the Texas Rangers. Richard spent nine years at The Dallas Morning News covering the Rangers, Stars, colleges, motorsports and high schools.
