There has been a series of massive Internet waves that have shaped the current online environment into the state it is in today. Ever since the Internet boom in the mid-90?s, the blog explosion a few years following, and the accessible user-created websites and advanced coding and Java, we have seen this shaping. But the most fascinating aspect of all this is the state of the domain name. Websites are created constantly and in immeasurable numbers through a wide spectrum. Yet as we look at the state of domains in these last few years, what has changed for the better- and for the worse?
Domain Disputes
One of the greater issues in the current state of domains/websites is the ?art? of domain disputes. The issue largely arises from trademarks, but another factor of this is ownership. There are many internal issues in domain ownership that causes disputes, largely due to the muddy and undefined specifications of it. The wide variety of servers, ways to purchase a site, and overlap with other business dealings, cause confusion and cracks for dispute. Who owns the domain name? Is it the individual whose name is on the website? Is it the name on the website log-in from the serve you purchased from? This issues overlap considerably, in multiple ways.
Copyrights and Trademarks (e-property)
The most controversial affair in domains is the aspect of trademarks and copyrights. A purchase of a domain name, say ?MusicHouse? which stores free legal music streaming, does not automate the purchase of the ?MusicHouse? trademark, nor does it technically mean you own the name at all. Domain names are often considered secondhand trademarks- not as valuable and overridden to those who own the trademark. The issue here is that these overlap further, causing a plethora of political issues towards specific brands and businesses. It is far easier to establish a name, and a bit lengthier of a process to purchase a trademark. The majority of websites lack any formal trademarks to defend them, leaving them vulnerable to the confusion state of modern day copyright law.
Bulk Buyers
A less immediate issue in domains is the current lack of availability. Through the last few years, individuals and businesses have built a sub-business in purchasing what they consider to be high-quality domains.
